Zakat in Oman - authority and context

In Oman, the official body overseeing zakat is the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs (MARA). The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs offers an online zakat payment service through the government portal at gov.om. Oman's population includes a significant Ibadi Muslim community alongside Sunni and Shia minorities; nisab and rate (2.5%) are agreed across all schools. The Omani Rial uses 3 decimal places (1 OMR = 1000 baisa). The sharia rules (2.5% rate, 85g gold or 595g silver nisab, one lunar year hawl) are agreed across the Sunni schools of jurisprudence and the calculator above implements them in Omani Rial (OMR).

Nisab in Omani Rial - how it's calculated

The nisab is calculated dynamically based on today's gold and silver prices in Omani Rial. Gold nisab = 85g x today's 24K gold price. Silver nisab = 595g x today's silver price. The calculator above uses the LESSER of the two thresholds (the more inclusive 'lesser-nisab' convention favored by modern scholars and most regional zakat institutions), since the silver nisab in OMR is usually lower than the gold nisab. Wealth above the nisab triggers zakat at 2.5%; below it, no zakat is due this year.

What wealth is zakatable

Zakatable wealth includes: cash and bank savings in OMR or any other currency (regardless of where held), gold and silver (jewelry, bullion, coins - the calculator follows the conservative inclusive default that includes everyday-worn jewelry), tradeable investments (stocks at market value, mutual funds, sukuk - those traded on the Oman stock exchange or any other), business inventory ready for sale, and sound debts (money owed to you that you reasonably expect to receive). Non-zakatable: your home, car, daily-use clothing, tools of trade, fixed business assets, and salary you're owed but haven't yet received.

Gold karat - converting to pure-gold equivalent

Zakat on gold is based on pure-gold content, not gross jewelry weight. So 100g of 22K gold contains 100 x 0.917 = 91.7g of pure gold; 100g of 18K contains 100 x 0.75 = 75g pure. Convert each piece to its pure-gold equivalent, sum them, and value at today's 24K spot price in OMR. The calculator handles karat conversion automatically. In Oman, 21K and 22K are the most common karats for jewelry; 18K is also widely sold.

Hawl, intention, and how to pay

The hawl (one full lunar year of continuous ownership above nisab) must elapse before zakat is due. Many Muslims fix their zakat date in Ramadan for spiritual reasons. Once due, zakat can be paid as money or in kind. In Oman, you can pay through Oman MARA's online platform, which distributes the funds to the eight categories defined in the Quran (9:60): the poor, the needy, zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, slaves seeking freedom, debtors, travelers in need, and those striving in God's path.

Frequently asked questions

The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs (MARA) is the governmental body that sets strategies for managing zakat in Oman. The Ministry offers an online zakat payment service through the government portal at gov.om, where you can direct funds to a specific category or region, with distribution reviewed by the Zakat Committee to eligible recipients in the Sultanate.

The nisab is the LESSER of: 85g of gold's value in OMR, or 595g of silver's value in OMR. As of February 2026, the silver-based nisab in Oman is approximately OMR 666 (per the Ministry's reference). The Omani Rial is also a high-value currency (1 OMR = ~$2.60), so absolute figures look small but represent significant wealth. The calculator computes the nisab live.

Oman has a significant Ibadi Muslim community (the largest Ibadi population worldwide) alongside Sunni and Shia minorities. On the core zakat rules - 2.5% rate, 85g gold or 595g silver nisab, and the requirement of hawl (one lunar year) - all schools including the Ibadi agree. Minor differences exist in specific edge cases (e.g., debt deduction conventions), but the core calculation is identical. The calculator above uses the majority-agreed conventions.

Yes. The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs provides an online zakat payment service through the official government portal at gov.om. The service lets you pay zakat through the electronic payment gateway, with the option to direct it to a specific category or region. Funds are distributed to eligible recipients in the Sultanate after review by the Zakat Committee.

1 Omani Rial = 1,000 baisa (the subunit). Like the Bahraini Dinar and Kuwaiti Dinar, OMR is a high-value currency with prices typically shown to 3 decimal places. Your bank statement may display balances to 3 decimals (e.g., 1,234.567 OMR). The calculator above accepts decimal inputs; for zakat amounts you can round to the nearest baisa or to the nearest whole OMR for ease of payment.
